Historic Ridgefield nursery on the market

628x471RIDGEFIELD — An historic nursery in southern Ridgefield that’s for sale for only the second time in a century is already attracting a variety of interest.

“It’s really a very unique property,” said Bob Cascella, a realtor with Goodfellow Real Estate who is representing the owners. “There isn’t anything else like this in Ridgefield.”

The nursery was first opened in 1903 by William Pinchbeck, who grew carnations that were shipped to markets in New York City. The family, which operated the business for three generations, later went on to grow the Pinchbeck rose, which was sought after during the heyday of the roaring ’20s.

“My grandfather used to use the southern exposure of the property to grow cut flowers,” said John Pinchbeck, a town resident and the last family member to have operated the business. “People loved our roses, and they were fresh. Today, roses are flown in from all over the place. There aren’t any local growers anymore.”

The property still includes many of the buildings first constructed by the family during the early 20th century, including a 15,000-square-foot greenhouse that was built around 1926, Pinchbeck said.

“During World War I, we would have to sleep in the boiler room and cut wood and restock the boiler whenever it was low,” Pinchbeck said.

628x471 2Cascella said the owners are looking to either sell the property–which sits on six acres and includes an irrigation system fed by a pond and a pump house–or lease it to another operator.

Pinchbeck sold the land in 1996. The nursery closed in 2013 after the current owners decided to focus on landscaping.

Cascella said he’s already received several inquiries from people who would like to operate the nursery as well as potential buyers who are considering a variety of uses for the site. The property, which is listed for $2 million, also includes a two bedroom home.

Cascella said that while the land could be subdivided for two homes, other more likely uses include recreational activities, such as a tennis club, soccer facility or a horse farm.

“Since the winter season broke we’ve been getting a flurry of activity surrounding the property,” he said.

Gina Coloni, a town resident who passes by the former nursery on a daily basis, said she used to love shopping there.

“They always had some really unique things and the staff was always so friendly and helpful,” she said. “It was something special.”

Pinchbeck said he would love to see the property remain a nursery, though he recognizes that kind of business isn’t for everyone.

“It’s very difficult today because there is so much competition out there,” he said. “And the prices of oil and taxes makes it even more difficult. When I decided to retire, nobody in the family wanted to take it over.”
